Umat Islam Perlu Tanda Aras Status Negara Berpendapatan Tinggi

Muslims Need Benchmarking To Attain High-income Nation Status, Says Abdullah
13/07/2010
KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Bernama) -- Muslims need benchmarking in education, technology, human development and research to attain high-income nation status, says former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Increase in first-class graduate statistics, people's literacy rate and workers' productivity through creativity and innovation are among other areas that need benchmarking, he said.
"If success is achieved in these fields, Muslims and Islamic country leaders will be able to come up with a self-sustainable economic model, rivaling the obsolete economic model left behind by the United States and the West," he said when opening a seminar entitled "New Economic Model: From The Islamic Perspective" hosted by the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM).
Abdullah, who is also IKIM chairman, said the people in the high-income economy would enjoy better living quality than those in the medium-high income economy.
He also said the approach to revamp the economy through conventional practices created numerous problems to economic stability.
Hence, a new economic model was needed, specially to meet Islamic nations' requirements, he said.
Abdullah said the model must be different from the old economic framework and have embedded Islamic values that can be a "saviour and blessing" to Muslims and can bolster their image, dignity and integrity besides having the basic fundamentals and added-value for justice, well-being and global economic stability.
"The spirit to instil Islamic values of justice and trustworthiness must be based on the principles of al-adl wal ihsan -- observe the spirit of justice and unity.
"The Islamic approach stresses on justice in all respect, prohibits all forms of exploitation, corruption, charging interest, unfair monopoly, market manipulation and all forms of cheating or cruel deeds that victimised certain groups," he added.
